Barron's Civil Service Exams
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (January, 2000)
Authors: Jerry Bobrow, Peter Z. Orton, and William A. Covino
Average review score:

a must-have for the clerical civil service exam!!
I purchased this book 3 weeks prior to taking the civil service clerical exam. I read the book and did all the practice exams. When I went to take the test, I knew what to expect and had confidence in my ability to do well. 50% of all people who take the test fail. Although the test is difficult, you owe it to yourself to be fully prepared before going in. This book is a excellent way to do that. The actual civil service clerical exam is divided into two sections: Clerical Abilities and Verbal Abilities. I thought that the Verbal Abilities test was harder than the examples in the book, but the Clerical Abilities test would be close to impossible without the information in this book. I can't imagine why anyone would go to all the trouble of taking this exam without preparing for it in advance. My advice: Buy the book and STUDY it before you go!!

This is a must have to pass the boards!!!!!!!!!
I highly recommend this book before taking the boards. It was the main tool i used to study by and I passed with the computer shutting off at 75. Especially if you are not all that comfortable with computer programs the disc that comes along with the book contains software the simulates the computer generated NCLEX. It even shuts off after you passed or failed. I glad I found it and just wanted to share with everyone else.

Barron's Mathematics Study Dictionary
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 1998)
Authors: Frank Tapson and Robert A. Atkins
Average review score:

An indispensible reference
My 12 year old (who hates math) picked up this book and said "awesome!" My 17 year old, who is taking pre-calculus, was fascinated - exclaiming, "I never knew that about circles!"

This study dictionary defines and explains mathematical terms and functions in a comprehensive, dictionary-style format. The information is geared for students from pre-algebra through college.

This is simply a reference that every student should have. The definitions and illustrated examples are grouped by concept. When you look up a term, you will find it on a page with all the other terms related to the same mathematical function. For example, the word "denominator" will be found under "fractions". In fact, just reading the definitions on any given page is a good introduction to the subject.

A comprehensive 'wordfinder' index at the begining of the book directs you to the right page. This book would be a bargain at twice the price. (It probably will make more sense to your kids than the explanations in their textbooks).

This book really is what the title suggests. It gives you everything you need to know to prepare for the SATs, except the shortened version..which is equally as good as the full version. Plus, it's cheap!
